Allowed Controllers at Genesis 4 for Smash 4 Wii U

Championship Sunday Theater

Hello everyone!

I haven’t updated this in a while but before I do my thank you post for The Big House 6 & a full ruleset release for Genesis 4, I figured I’d make sure to list out the controllers allowed for Genesis 4 for Smash 4 Wii U as I have had many ask.

I listed them out in a series of tweets, which I will list below:

I hope this is accommodating to everyone who wishes to compete in Smash 4 Wii U. Very similar to how I did things at CEO 2016 and Shine 2016, the ruling will essentially be written out as:

  • Allowed Controllers:
    • GameCube Controller
    • Wii U Pro Controller [wired method with battery removed and bring your own USB cable (model WUP-018) to plug into Wii U to play]
      • How to play a Wii U Pro Controller with the wired method [source: http://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1732/~/how-to-remove-or-replace-the-battery-in-a-wii-u-pro-controller]
        • Notes:

          • Turn the Wii U console power off and disconnect the USB cable if it is connected to the controller.
          • Use a crosshead style, size #00 screwdriver to avoid damage to the screw or threads.
          • Do not use any battery other than the Wii U Pro Controller rechargeable battery, model No. CTR-003.

          What to Do:

          1. Loosen the screw and remove the battery cover.
            • The battery cover is designed so the screw can be loosened, but not fully removed.

          2. Remove the battery by inserting the stylus from the Wii U GamePad under the battery and gently lifting the edge.
          3. After 10 seconds, insert the new battery from the right.
          4. Replace the battery cover and tighten the screw, being careful not to over tighten it.

    • Wii Motes & Nunchuck [batteries must be removed immediately upon completion of set]
    • 2DS/3DS [must be responsible of having a fully charged DS along with your own working charger]

Hope to see many of you at Genesis 4! We are less than 100 days away! Register today at smash.gg/4!

Thank you everyone for Smash 4 Wii U @ #CEO2016

FB_IMG_1467046484756.jpg

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who came out to the event and thank you to everyone for tuning into #CEO2016. This was probably one of the most stacked tournaments since Genesis 3, and I certainly most delivered a magnificent show. There was a few things I will most definitely recommend as improvements for next year to Jebailey, but overall the tournament was the most exciting I’ve seen in the short history of Smash 4.

I do want to take a moment to say thank you to all the volunteers at #CEO2016 who put in work for brackets on Day 1 Friday. There was so many pools to cover and some overlap between Doubles & Singles, and I’d much prefer having them separate days at any future events I’m involved with. I really appreciated everyone’s patience at the venue with the heat & lack of wireless network.

Really appreciated the patience y’all had with MKXL’s Top 8 as they had a delayed start time as a. It was great to meet and I had the pleasure to be your Smash 4 Wii U TO for the weekend. I hope to improve any way I can for any future events I may be your TO for.

Greatly appreciate every single volunteer at #CEO2016 for giving your time to help make this a success. Without you, we couldn’t have done it and I hope Top 8 Sunday in the ring was a great reward of itself.

Thank you to Jebailey for believing in me & giving me the responsibility of Smash 4 Wii U. I’m very humbled to have accomplished this and looking forward to seeing y’all soon enough better improved as well at #EVO2016.

Safe journeys back home everyone,

Tournament Burnout & Why It’s Okay to Find Your Pace

sleepy-bear

I may not be the Smash Bros illuminati elite, but I definitely notice the difference between the amount of tournaments in the Smash Bros community. The growth has been extraordinary. I remember back before Smash Bros went wild I begged for tournaments & the only ones that were going on were the ones I hosted. Granted this was early 2000s in Saudi Arabia in Aramco (an American community in Dhahran), it had that grassroots feel, well there wasn’t any grass…so more like sand box beginnings.

Anyways, fast forward past my move to the USA and after my hiatus from being involved in the Smash Bros community and more importantly the years since 2014. When I finally had time to breathe and look into the Smash Bros community again while at UNLV (University of Nevada Las Vegas), I got the Smash Bros bug to get back involved into the community. I had no idea I’d be where I am today and honestly appreciate & cherish each day as some people in the Smash 4 community look up to me, which I’m a short guy so I appreciate it.

More importantly to get to the point of this post, tournament burnout is apparent and I see people projecting their emotions through their performance at tournaments & their social media interactions. Most professional sports organizations have an off season & that’s how we grew up. NFL takes a few months off between playoffs & Spring, NBA takes the summer off, and MLB has winter to hibernate. Competitive Smash Bros does not have an off season. For professionals who are in it to win every big prize they can, currently there is almost 2 large tournaments a month and much more if you factor in games a player competes in, invitationals, EXPOs, conventions, and local tournaments.

Before I ramble on too much, I just wanted to say I’m truly happy to see so much activity in the competitive Smash Bros community, but also that it is perfectly fine to go at your own pace. Also your pace is not the same as someone else’s pace, do what you feel is right and remember to put your priorities first. If you believe that going to only one national a month is enough while you practice and attend locals to test your might, that’s completely fine and anyone giving you crap has no idea how you feel and forgot that person.

You are the most important person to worry about in your competitive endeavours, and it’s important to remember to find your own pace.

Thank you for taking your time to read this and I love you buddy. Don’t fret about making it to everything. Make it to what you feel would be best for you.

Lots of love & luck from Vegas,
Bear

Payout & Percentages for FGC Tournaments

BearUNLV payouts percentage panda global

One of the most common questions I get from new tournament organizers in Smash Bros, Pokken Tournament, and some FGC is “How do I setup payouts? Is there a set %? Everything is different I’m a bit confused.”

First off, a few things to consider:

1. This is my opinion and not the only way to have it setup, but hopefully this helps.

2. Always have your payout procedure & percentages in writing when posting the event to various outlets.

3. Make sure you ensure that 1st place doesn’t get shafted; hard work should be rewarded.

4. The talent pool of a tournament shouldn’t affect your payouts mid tournament, you should set it in advance and prepare for any number of people inbound.

5. If there’s a pot bonus, make sure you indicate how it’s being distributed.

6. If you change anything (which I don’t recommend if you are have a large number of people payed & signed up), make sure you let people know via all means of communication tools you’re equipped with (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, blog, Vine, Snapchat, or whatever you can use to get the message out there).

Now to my recommendations for percentages based on number of entrants:

Less than 32 players; Top 3
1st 60%
2nd 30%
3rd 10%
[Pretty standard local payout]

33 to 128 players; Top 4
1st 55%
2nd 27%
3rd 13%
4th 5%

129 to 512 players; Top 8
1st 50%
2nd 25%
3rd 12%
4th 7%
5th 2% & 2%
7th 1% & 1%

512+ players; Top 16
1st 50%
2nd 25%
3rd 12%
4th 7%
5th 2% & 2%
7th 1% & 1%
9th venue fee + entry fee (x4)
13th venue fee (x4)
[After taking out the 9th & 13th payouts, divide up the rest of top 8 with remaining funds]

You’re more than welcome to adjust & use whatever payout you choose. I hope this helps people as a blueprint.

Best,

Bear

CEO 2016 Smash 4 Wii U Ruleset Graphic

Above is the CEO 2016 Super Smash Bros for Wii U (Smash 4) Ruleset in a nice high resolution image by Panda Global’s KTH.

Check out Keith (Panda Global @PG_KTH here: https://twitter.com/PG_KTH

I asked KTH to make this so that any TO that is in need has a nice easy to read printable ruleset. (Minor changes/edits may happen; if they do I’ll adjust the image accordingly with the help of my trusted graphic designers). Note that CEO, they’re allowing wireless controllers with a strict desync policy to avoid any delays.

This is approved by Alex Jebailey and we appreciate his support. We did this out of courtesy to the Smash 4 scene and wanted to ensure every TO, player, commentator, and spectator has easy access to something visual for the CEO 2016 Ruleset.

I hope this is of use for some people. If you need a high resolution emailed to you, just DM on Twitter and I’ll send it to you.

Love Letter to the Smash Bros Community

Earlier this week I wasn’t in the best place with so much family duties to tend to along with esports & my full time aviation job, but a Las Vegas local I’ve never met came to a tournament I TO’d at and thanked me for being a positive impact on the community & to his high school friends. They all are came out their first time to a tournament where they thought they would be bodied but ended up doing quite well. It was very heartwarming to see a group of friends say to themselves “let’s put ourselves out in the real world.”

That fam is what I strive for as a community leader. I don’t care for the winning a tournament, pulling off an awesome Oddshot worthy combo on stream, or being a famous tournament organizer (lolz really I’m nothing special).

It’s about the community. It’s about inspiring someone I’ve never known to come out with his or her friends to have a good time.

To see them smile.
To see them salty.
To see them shy.
To see them shout.
To see them sacrifice a whole night.
To see them Smash.

It’s a beautiful thing to see what I see, and I’m happy y’all like me enough to keep me around.

Thank you to everyone for your support & wonderful heartwarming gestures. I love the local Las Vegas Smash Bros community & they’re growing nicely in this small town (yes we’re not as big as you think we are). And thank you Tesla for reminding me why I got into TOing & community leadership in the first place.

Y’all are awesome. I may be not TOing in March & April for my wedding, honeymoon, & family, but I’ll still be there to help y’all when I can.

All the love & luck,
Bassem “Bear” Dahdouh
